Introduction to Birding with Chris Buelow

February 16th to May 21st

The goal of this class is to help the novice naturalist learn how to identify birds, how to find them in the field, to understand conservation issues facing our birds, and to instill a lifelong interest in birding and natural history.

Preregistration is required

Class Times: 7-9:00 p.m. on the 1st Wed evening of each month

Class Location: at the Land Trust Office, 120 Ridge Road, Hardwick

Field Trips: Saturday mornings, the 3rd weekend of each month (some exceptions for long weekends.)

Class size: Limited to 12, no one under 13 yrs. old

Fee: $200.00, due the first class

Required Materials: Peterson's Field Guide, Binoculars (don't buy before the 1st class)

Suggested Reading: Bird Finding Guide to Western Mass.

February – Birds, Birding and Getting Started
Field Trip: EQLT feeder watch and short, local walk TBA

March – Focus on Identification (Overview and Some Families)
Field Trip: Quabbin waterfowl and eagles (Gate 37 or 43)

April – More Identification by Families
Field Trip: Woodcock watch in Moose Brook Valley (afternoon into evening)

May – Life Histories by Families/Species (Migration, Habitat, etc)
Field Trip: Winimusset, Moose Brook, Raccoon Hill, Quabbin Gate 40 (all day)

This class is intended for the novice to early beginner, and may not be appropriate for those who already have established birding skills.
